One of the most horrific and shocking things I've ever seen, but not because of gore, violence, or jump-scares. I have never been truly disturbed by a movie my entire life until I saw this one. This may be the most impactful film I have ever seen.
The monster here is slow death by mediocrity.
When the movie ended I was confused. I didn't know how to feel about it. It felt like it fell apart in the second half and just abruptly ended.
Since then I've just been turning it over in my head again and again. It is true psychological horror in that it challenges the most disturbing parts of your psyche. What are you burying deep inside of yourself out of fear of self-discovery and the immense effort of leaving a constrained life for your true one?
The depiction of the feeling of the '90s was spot on perfect. The visuals were so creative yet felt so authentic.
The film is a character study in someone too afraid to pursue who they truly are and how it kills them over time. That's the horror. If you have ever seen anyone like that or been that person, it's one of the worst wastes of potential imaginable.
I really resonated with Maddy. I was once very close with someone, we shared a deep connection bonded over a fantasy world. There was something otherworldly about how close we were and what we were able to do in that world. But this person was attachment avoidant and dismissive, so they ran from the connection.
The stronger it was, the more terrified they were, and the more they fled it. Ultimately, I watched this person betray me and themselves. They sold their true self down the river, denied our shared world, and chose mediocrity.
This important person refused to recognize they were Isabela. They refused to start season 6. They refused to realize that The Pink Opaque was real and what they were choosing was the midnight realm.
We had to part. I had to be true to myself. They chose the midnight realm.
I think this movie won't make sense to people who haven't carefully watched people who run away from life challenges as opposed to confront them. They're everywhere. They are most people. But if you haven't paid attention, if you don't have the imagination to see those people's potentials, you won't understand the terrifying horrific tragedy of Owen.
You won't understand how horrible it is for Maddy to watch Isabella betray them both, and all of it just to feel safe while she dies.
