PART 1
>I'm finding it hard to follow along. How is it possible for a "philosophical naturalist" to conclude something is supernatural? Would that not cease them from being a naturalist? And when Little, Kojonen etc say that they are willing to entertain the supernatural, they are saying they are willing to (1) consider it and (2) even potentially accept it as true (at the evaluation level).
Think of it like a ladder. At the top is objective Truth (capital "T"). To get to the top, first you need to climb out of "are my thoughts real and reliable?" The second rung is, "is the outside world real?" The third rung is "are my perceptions of the outside world real?" The fourth, "how can I prove that the previous rungs are true?"
You have to climb this ladder until you get to the point where you are looking at the radiocarbon analysis of the Sanā palimpsest's lower text and trusting the dating.
You can't make it to the top without skipping rungs. It's impossible. Everyone does this without realising it. It's baked into being human.
Philosophical naturalism is the belief that the material world is self-evident without recourse to an immaterial plane and that objective knowledge can only be gained from empirical reality. Methodological naturalism is an approach to science that states all experiences must be explainable by the observable laws of nature.
A philosophical naturalist can believe that there is another plane of existence and even that that plane can interact with ours, but would simply argue we need to describe our experiences through the prism of our senses. They would usually be extremely skeptical of any supernatural claims and require empirical evidence for it but be willing to consider it.
A methodological naturalist is also a philosophical naturalist but with the added layer of, "in this science I am embarking on I do not consider the possibility of phenomenon outside of the productive capacity of nature."
