My Resumé Explains my Conviction. Got invited to paid training for a job. Not sure they "get it".
I was released from prison weeks ago for a conspiracy charge on which I did five years. I redid my resume and applied to dozens of jobs.
I went to an interview for a good position in a professional setting after a good phone interview. They told me they want me to start paid training in two weeks. However, they said that I will have to, "pass a background check." I was somewhat surprised because it is clearly on my resume. Though the print is somewhat small, the resume clearly has a section explaining my criminal background.
I am looking for advice. What should I do? Should I write an email emphasizing that I am a convict? Can they refuse to formally hire me after the background check? The relevant portion says,
"To Whom it May Concern:
...I would like to intimate the existence of a past Federal conviction. It resulted from immature conduct perpetrated whilst I was legally a juvenile. Due to the level of proficiency usedin furthering those behaviors, I was sentenced to serve five years in adult prisons. I have taken full responsibility for my youthful mistakes and have suffered the full penalty of law. It ismy hope that prior juvenile actions doea not disqualify me from a position which I am prepared to occupy.
It was in the harsh environment of high security institutions that I learned many tactics and acquired many skills perhaps otherwise unattainable by the general public. I learned topersevere in extreme, stressful, situations and maintain cognition in the face of considerable cost. As a result, I learned the value of time and hard work - as only they have allowed me totranscend those circumstances. Those adverse life experiences have allowed me to grow and change significantly from the initial instance of infraction. I am more than willing to discussthis period of my past in contrast with who I am now, whether through virtual correspondence or in-person. Please have no hesitation in inquiry.

I believed that I amparticularly equipped to assist you. I am a firm believer in many of your foundational principles. With my particular focus on the intersection between business and technology, myskillset could represent an invaluable asset to the growth of your projects.
I am automatically bonded up to twenty-five thousand dollars ($25,000) by the Federal government's Bureau of Workforce payable to any employer in consideration as insurance, without deductibles. I am also eligible for the Work Opportunity TaxCredit (www.doleta.gov) for up to ninety-six hundred dollars in tax credits. Thank you for your consideration.
