By Ali Shukri Amin. I first wrote this as a comment on r/AcademicQuran, in the thread “Bring one surah like it, or… ten like it!”, copied here as written.
This requires buying into the paradigm of naturalistic phenomenon being objectively true and provable but non-naturalistic phenomenon being either nonexistant or unprovable. That is a very clear bias.
If I were to ask you, on what basis besides blind faith or modern academic convention, should we accept that naturalistic phenomenon are true or real – what would the academic of Quranic studies say?
If we’re taking a truly hard materialistic stance, then you can’t rely on the epistemological/ontological systems of secular philosophers like Hegel.
So how does the secular academic of Quranic studies prove that naturalism is a justifiable approach to attaining “unbiased” knowledge?
If you had said, “secular academia makes numerous assumptions and does not bother itself with justifying them, one of them being that supernatural beings do not exist” that would have been tenable.
But the claim of “unbiased” is provably false.
