Do Any Sunnis Reject the Uprightness of the Companions? — Ali Shukri Amin

By Ali Shukri Amin. I first wrote this as a comment on r/AcademicQuran, in the thread “Is there any Sunni sect that rejects Adalat al-Sahabah (Arabic: عدالة الصحابة)”, copied here as written.
Orthodox Sunnism acknowledges that some of the sahabah were hypocrites, such as Abdullah ibn Ubayy, but asserts that the sahabah as a class are saved and should not be criticized. This doesn’t mean that some Sunni scholars were not farther on the spectrum of Tashayyu’ or preferring Ali and critiquing Mu’awiyyah – such as al-Nasa’i. However, you’re not going to find a Sunni scholar calling Mu’awiyyah or his partisans a hypocrite as the boundaries of Sunnism are partially defined by holding the opposing doctrine.
By the time Sunnism exists historically, it is defined by upholding the uprightness of the sahabah.
