Ibn Taymiyya and the Revival of Early Hanbali Conclusions — Ali Shukri Amin

By Ali Shukri Amin. I first wrote this as a comment on r/AcademicQuran, in the thread “Did Ibn Taymiyyah create a hyper conservative strand of Atharism, or rather continue it's legacy?”, copied here as written.
Ibn Taymiyyah revived the conclusions of the early Hanbalites which the Atharis/Hanbalis had gradually moved away from. Generally speaking, the first & second wave of Hanbalis leaned extremely literalist and sometimes borderline anthropomorphist.
Eventually the school was forced to justify some of the more incredulous views leading to qaḍī Abu Ya’la’s attempt to create an almost Hanbali kalām, ibn Jawzī attempting to argue Hanbalism is a kind of relegationist Asharism (tafwīd), ibn Aqīl adopting some Mutazili views, etc.
Eventually ibn Qudama was able to codify a kind of Atharism that was palatable without delving much into Kalām and with rejecting the more extreme interpretations of the earlier Hanbalites. He really toed the line between tafwid & “ithbat”.
Ibn Taymiyyah wanted to reconcile all of mainstream Hanbali history while boasting the facially problematic views of the early Atharis and justifying them as the legitimate views. So, his conclusions initially seem to agree with the hardline Hanbali theologians. After all, this is what he himself claims.
This is a superficial reading of ibn Taymiyyah.
Ibn Taymiyyah was a unique creative thinker & a philosopher who introduced views no one before him had ever articulated. In some cases he agreed with the Mu’tazilah, in others the early Hanbalis, in others the later Hanbalis, in others he had his own views entirely.
Ibn Taymiyyah’s system of Atharism begins by repudiation of formal logic as intially described by Aristotle, going so far as to critique the very idea of a syllogism. He then develops his own theory of linguistics (al-asmā al-mutakafi’ah) and tries to demonstrate that it was the default operant one since the time of Sibawayh until Asharites adopted Greek philosophy.
From there, he brings his own theory of linguistics & repudiation of the rules of formal logic to the Ṣifat controversy, atomism, causality, predestination, and almost every other issue you can think of.
Ibn Taymiyyah was a unique & revolutionary Islamic thinker who is still poorly understood today in large part because he adopted the trappings of hyper orthodoxy. He himself believed that he was just justifying a literalist and originalist approach to Islam. However, he never shied away from disagreeing with conclusions that contradicted his idiosyncratic and sophisticated system of thought. So while ibn Taymiyyah has been read as a strict Hanbali, I think it’s more fruitful to look at the vastness of his methodological thinking than the label he insists you apply to him.
What modern people think of as a Salafi is more akin to Mohammed bin Abd al-Wahhab who was greatly influenced by ibn Taymiyyah but certainly did not appreciate the finer nuances of his school. Even then, it’s moreso 2nd wave Wahhabism than MIAW proper.
