A companion to my video on the Ṣaḥīfa of Hammām ibn Munabbih. The background is here; the video is linked below.

One of the recurring debates about hadith concerns when the reports were written down — whether they floated for generations as pure oral memory before being committed to paper, or whether written records ran alongside oral transmission from very early on. The Ṣaḥīfa of Hammām ibn Munabbih is one of the most important pieces of evidence in that discussion.

What it is

The Ṣaḥīfa is a small early collection — a single “page” or booklet — of reports that Hammām ibn Munabbih (d. c. 101/719) took from the Companion Abū Hurayra, whose student he was. It preserves on the order of a hundred and forty narrations, transmitted as a discrete unit.

Why it matters

Its significance is documentary. Because it can be placed with a first-century transmitter writing directly from a Companion, it offers concrete evidence that hadith were being fixed in written form within the first century of Islam — not only carried in memory and set down centuries later. And when the contents of this early written unit are compared with the same reports as they appear in later canonical collections, the degree of stability in the wording is itself a data point about how carefully the material was transmitted.

The larger point

Documents like the Ṣaḥīfa shift the burden in the “oral versus written” debate. They do not by themselves settle every question about authenticity, but they make it harder to assume, as a default, that early hadith transmission was purely oral and therefore maximally unstable. That is the thread I develop in the video.
