Original discussion: Minimalism is not an excuse for poor design.
I have been using a Light Phone for over two years now. Previously, I had various flip-phones or other dumbphones but US coverage ended up dropping 2G and 3G communications. Before that I had a smartphone for a few months, before that on-and-off smart/dumb phones, etc.
The phone has some positives and some drawbacks. The positives are with respect to what it does not do and the negatives are with respect to what it should do/is not.
Positives:
If you want more peace of mind you will certainly get it. This thing is very very easy to ignore or even forget about entirely. It is designed to disengage you.
It still has basic functionality like a calculator, voice-to-text texting, Google Maps GPS (takes a long time to load and is not ideal).
Takes any SIM card so you can use it as a side phone for when you need some peace.
Looks cool and gets a lot of comments.
Negatives:
The e-ink screen is very jarring for the first few weeks of usage and should definitely be phased out. It changes to the opposite color momentarily every time the screen updates and is not the best to look at.
The screen being so small makes typing a chore, which will definitely get you off of your device but means I mostly use text-to-speech which doesn't recognize Arabic phrases very well.
The phone itself could be made of higher quality materials for the price and be more robust.
There is no place to insert an SD card meaning you cannot use this device to play your own saved media files. It has podcasts which you can download, but only from certain official podcast vendors, and a music option which I have never used.
No built-in flashlight.
No GPS tracking on the device so if you lose it it's hard to recover (and it is pretty easy to lose this thing considering how good it is at disengaging you).
Conclusion:
I think this is a good option for someone that wants to get rid of their smartphone or at least limit it. It has some unnecessary design limitations which are outdated and unnecessary for sure. However, it does exactly what it is advertised to do, help you stop being stuck on your phone all the time. If that's what you want, that's what you will get.
