I think the last third of the main quest essentially loses the pacing of the rest of the game. The fact that this game even exists at all is remarkable. And only 5 years in development.
I think there were too many good ideas and no way to organically expound on them. It really feels like the plot after the black stones quest needed another 1/4th of the game to wrap it up elegantly.
Instead, we make it to the Star City, find out the starlings are gone, discover that the Cleansing is a reproduction mechanism for High Ones, basically just out of Yaela's mind with few hints or build up or validation after. Then there's the Numinos, entering a High One's mind, and all of the exposition by the Black Guardian.
Too many things happen too fast and too much of it is just exposition. It wraps up the game but the execution isn't good. It's especially jarring because nothing else in the game is like that. The pacing and plot until this point is incredibly well measured. Then bam suddenly you get everything just thrown at you.
I think it's still one of the best of all time. Especially considering there were no resources dedicated to this volunteer project. I think if they had a bit more resources, the last third of the main quest needs to be doubled in length and the information delivered more organically.
If there's ever an official release as a standalone I would hope for that.
That being said, the Esme and Rhalata questlines add a lot in terms of developing some of these concepts.
