Do we know that the Quran was ever actually recited in the Old Hijazi dialect as you've done here? If so please link a source. My understanding was that jahili poetry had some rules of Tajwid which were applied to the Quran.

Additionally why does your delateralized dād have an almost ch sound to it? Shouldn't it sound more like a zhā or a lām?

"The mismatch between the language of the reading traditions and the orthography has normally been explained as the result of orthographic conventions such as ‘pausal spelling’. "

Isn't this paper discussing the variation between the spoken dialect and the consonantal text, indicating that the spoken Arabic at the time of the Quran was not the same as formal recited jahili poetic Arabic?

There are several Quranic recitations that do not use Hamzah.

So you believe i'rab was backprojected onto the Quran?

Thanks for clarifying that. This is the first I'm hearing of this argument.

The Arabs consider there to be two categories of Arab: Arab al-'aribah and Arab al-musta'ribah. The original Arabs are NOT descendants of Isma'il. They are the people Isma'il met when Hajar brought him to the Jurhum tribe.

The descendants of Isma'il are the musta'ribah.

Over time there was so much intermarriage between the musta'ribah and the 'aribah that it was no longer possible to distinguish them and they all became "descendants of Isma'il."

Not all of the Arabs are claimed to descend from Ismail. Only the musta'ribah are.

Not relating to your specific example but this is a question throughout the Quran (& hadith). There are a lot of interpretative questions that hinge on huruf al-'atf (conjunctive particles).

Sibawayh (Al-Kitab v. 3) and al-Farra (quoted in Ma'ani al-Qur'an) claim that "thumma" does not necessitate sequential order with respect to time. Some went so far as to say it does not even necessitate sequence with respect to preference (Maliki school takes this view).

The default meaning of thumma is either sequence of precedence or time unless there is another reason to indicate otherwise. Sequence should be assumed unless some other detail demonstrates that it shouldn't. It is usually sequentially but doesn't have to be.

Exegetes sometimes used context outside of the Verse such as other Verses, hadith, logic, etc. Sequence is strongly suggested for thumma, that's the best way to say it. But if a grammarian comes across some other evidence that they subjectively feel is stronger than that suggestion, they will override it.

Horror has been in a horrible rut for years, possibly two decades. This is the first year where it's made a genuine comeback, due in no small part to a few auteurs that intentionally went against the grain to revive the genre (Peele, Aster, Eggars, Cregger).

r/classicliterature

Great Gatsby I have to say is an extremely overrated classic and I genuinely despise the stream of consciousness modernist style of Proust, Joyce, & co. That being said there are definitely some flashes of brilliance in Proust.

r/CriticalTheory

Unironically quoting One Piece as part of religious discourse is beyond cringe. Such a great representation of how a tiny bit of knowledge is more dangerous than no knowledge. These billionaires can't recognize that their success is not attributable to their slightly above average intelligence and is, instead, just a statistical reality (someone has to occupy the outlier top 0.0001% and just so happens to be them).

They also don't realize that the statistical likelihood of having that kind of wealth AND having generational intelligence is infinitesimally minute. There's almost no chance of this happening. It's much more likely someone closer to average intelligence with average ethical capacity but delusions of grander has that wealth.

Which is what we're seeing.

He needs a basic class on statistics and sociology, not manga or people taking him seriously as a thinker. Unfortunately with his wealth and power he's just going to have his ego fed.

r/Djinnology

The idea of a jinn overpowering a person's will and controlling them was not accepted by all of the ulama. I believe ibn Hazm found no evidence for this. It is not a required Islamic belief. If you think the scriptural and/or empirical evidence indicates that it is possible, you can believe it. If not, then you aren't required to.

That being said, believing that shayatin/jinn can affect (benefit or harm) humans absolutely is a required belief.

It's not my job to provide you with the evidence to sufficiently convince you of anything. You are welcome that I even broached this little known view and added it to the discussion. You are not entitled to people's contributions.

InshaAllah it was a miscommunication over text & I apologize for being stand offish.

r/enderal

There's definitely a component of creating self-destructive problems due to mental, emotional, and psychological vices. But how that relates to the mind-body duality the game keeps emphasizing would be the crux of what I'm looking for

I found this post relating the themes to gnosticism: https://www.reddit.com/r/enderal/s/eNvZ11pff9

How does this relate to Freudian psychoanalysis and especially Carl Jung?

I don't know anything about Bob Doyle. Can you give me a concise summary of how his ideas are relevant here?

It's ironic to me that the High Ones advocate for a pure Platonic spiritual form when it's their own drive to create a new High One that is the main corrupting force of the flesh on earth. The Father seems to have believed that the flesh is fundamentally corrupt for a long time as did the Kor cultists, but it doesn't seem any of these civilizations were particularly nefarious until the introduction of the High Ones.

If we take the myth of Kadath at face value, then the suffering of the flesh is essentially neccesary for the stability of the spirit. When the Kadathians had too perfect of a society, everything went awry, which supposedly lead the Veiled Woman to initiate the cycle in the first place - to keep mankind away from achieving a fleshly paradise because it was devoid of meaning.

I think the High Ones are just a tool for the Veiled Woman allieve mankind of the deep everlasting misery of meaninglessness. Without toil, according to the myth, the Kadathians became totally despondent and aimless. So, she has created this system where the collected consciousness of a civilization can all live on with a new ostensibly nefarious purpose while allowing new civilizations to blossom until reaching the stage of development at which they would eventually reach total prosperity.

My dear friend,

It is such a delight to hear from you again.

I don't wish to lie to you - but my hopes are limited.

At first the changes in Nehrim seemed so promising, but now everything is back at its old pace. I am concerned for you too, dear friend. I value you as a man of strong character, but your last letter kept me worrying.

Don't forget what brought forward my own downfall. It was pride. Don't let my mistake be the same as yours.

In brotherly love, Gajus

The more I think about it:

- Yero had Sira, which mirror's Gajus' woman in the water.
- Yero suddenly demonstrated deep magical ability despite being of another path.
- Yero was clearly trying to revive Sira somehow with the phantasmalist equipment in his basement, preserving her corpse, and the Dreamflower.
- Perhaps Yero was fleshless somehow?

The thinking is that Alfrid looks a lot like Gajus. We don't know who Gajus letter is to. However, it's to an old friend. The only other person who really resembles a prophet, that we know of, that it's conceivable Gajus was friends with for some significant amount of time is Yero.

The letter was addressed to Yero because Gajus thought he was (or perhaps he was a failed) Prophet. When Yero kills himself, Gajus leaves the letter in his office for the current prophet to find. It is FOR the current Prophet NOW but it was initially addressed to someone else, who I am guessing could be Yero.

It's just a guess. We would need the SureAI team to confirm. And it may be serendipity that they never intended but could be a good explanation they could adopt years later 🤷‍♂️

If he is fleshless is it possible for him to take other forms? At this point we're definitely just speculating blindly.

In Yero's final letter to Sira he says,

"We should have fled, to some remote island to become old together ... but we didn't, and now I'm here with your blood on my hands, all because I infected you with my folly. I'll go, Sira. I don't know whether something awaits me after death or whether it's just darkness, and to be honest - I don't care."

Which is the exact thing that Gajus did with his Lady in the Water & which is one of the endings the Prophet can have.

I think the last third of the main quest essentially loses the pacing of the rest of the game. The fact that this game even exists at all is remarkable. And only 5 years in development. I think there were too many good ideas and no way to…

Enderal is to Skyrim what New Vegas is to Fallout 3. The same engine, the same underlying mechanics, some improvements on gameplay, but an incredible story on top. I think it's genuinely debatable whether Enderal or New Vegas is superior plot and world building wise. In some respects the writing & depth of the plot is more sophisticated than New Vegas, in other ways New Vegas is superior.

Obviously it blows Skyrim out of the water in this regard.

Where Skyrim is a bit stronger is in diversity of side areas, more content, and more dispersion of content/NPCs across the world map. In Enderal everything is much more cloistered and a lot of the side areas are underutilized or not as interesting.

Skyrim may also have marginally more player choice than Enderal. There's no opposing factions you can freely side with here in Enderal. Most of the major decisions are made right before an ending, so you can save and see the two options.

I thought Skyrim was a marked improvement over Oblivion in the vast majority of aspects. Enderal is a marked improvement over Skyrim in the same way, but especially with respect to writing and plot.

From what perspective? From the perspective of social commentary and political analysis I don't think there's anyone in gaming close to him. Probably John Gonzales/Chris Avellone and Ken Levine. But they aren't singular auteurs like Kojima.

What makes Kojima different than other auteurs is the fact that his games aren't enclosed creative universes. Kojima has a lot to say about the real world. Usually someone that has this level of insight isn't a singular gaming creative mind. He's truly unique in that respect.

If we aren't considering social commentary/geopolitics but branch out into philosophy then Nicholas Lietzau who is arguably an auteur himself.

PO laid the groundwork for PW & MGSV design-wise. The idea of abducting troops, indoctrinating them, building your own army, etc. all stem from PW. It's definitely rough when compared to V but you can see where the ideas came from.

The plot is also the most schitzophrenic and least in line with the rest of the series IMO. Way too much exposition in the end.

This is helpful.

I believe a lot of the controversies around takfir in the istighatha debate revolve around the lack of consideration between popular & academic religion. There is certainly a lot of incorrect conflation of folk popular religious practices with the academic views of ulama and vice versa. So the educated Ashairah/Sufis become maligned for the practices of laymen that they either disapprove of or create some far-fetched ta'wil to save their iman so to speak.

There was a tendency to want to excuse laymen for their ignorance but pin responsibility on the ulama when really the Sufi/Ashari ulama were trying to stay within Tawhid very diligently in a way some of the awwam definitely were/are not.

There's just a bunch of sEnTiEnT bEiNGs sUfFeRrInG and assumptions of consequentialism/utilitarianism.

They are the main methods of... utilitarian argument. Which is the same as consequentialism. It's like you guys are totally unaware of moral nihilism, deontology, and virtue ethics.

Virtue ethics. Deontological ethics. Moral nihilism.

They're just downvoting people for making actual arguments lol

It is not the largest. The majority of people around the world follow an organized religion and therefore subscribe to deontological ethics. Consequentialism is the most popular ethical system for secular or nonreligious people.

No. What is halal and haram is deontologically determined. It is not a consequentialist or suffering based argument.

This is just totally false. Utilitarianism itself has no transcendental moral anchor. There isn't even an attempt to rationalize or justify why we should be utilitarian. It's just a consequence of getting rid of deontological and virtue ethics.

Deontological ethics are predicated on some kind of belief in a higher moral power that has set an objective morality. Virtue ethics is based on the belief that there are objective virtues we can aspire towards and that we can determine what those virtues are.

You really think that there is no ethics outside of utilitarianism and it's embarassing

I think you should either take a course or read a book on the various theories of moral philosophy. It's too much to get into in reddit comments. There are serious problems with utilitarianism. Hitler & Stalin were both consistent utilitarians. Based on utilitarian philosophy there is no objective way to debunk their ends-justify-the-means approach to utilitarianism. That's not even getting into the epistemology and ontological issues

I think it's extremely simplistic to make avoidance of suffering and death in all forms some absolute rule. Kierkegaard discusses how it is through choosing to suffer that one becomes fully human.

Asexual =/= aromantic. There are way more aaexual women than aromantic. There is a large population of women who are asexual but romantic or even sexually averse and romantic. Men often fall in love with such women.

How is this even a debate? Just look at the stats. Your anecdotal friend group is irrelevant.

60% of men under 30 are single. That number has been the same since 2019. https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/02/08/for-valentines-day-5-facts-about-single-americans/

28% of men under 35 have no close connections

https://news.gallup.com/poll/690788/younger-men-among-loneliest-west.aspx#:~:text=%25%20Yes,higher%20than%20the%20OECD%20median.

45% of men under 26 have never even approached a woman romantically.

Even for men who are married, an estimated 20% of those marriages are sexless. They are involuntarily celibate in their own marriages.

In 2024, 12% of young men were NEET.

Unemployment is at 6% for men under 30. However, this doesn't take into consideration job satisfaction & under-employment/over-education which is extremely high.

Statistically, the average man under 30 in the US is working a dead-end job that he is overqualified for, is single, and has not had many or perhaps any meaningful romantic relationships. There's also a 1/3 chance he has no friends or meaningful family connections.

You don't see single men with no friends out and about town. You don't meet NEETs in college. However, this is what the research says is happening.

Why are you assuming that if women are coupling at a nearly double rate that this is oversampling and not indicative of polygyny? Or coupling with men who are older than this age group? You're projecting your bias towards monogamy onto the data instead of following the data to its conclusion.

One of the key thesis of red pill praxeology is that societies are fundamentally polygynous so it's surprising that that explanation wasn't readily apparent to you on PPD.

The data on male desire is from the Kinsey Report on Sexual Behavior in Human Males: averages of 54% of men think about sex every day or several times a day. 43% a few times a week or a few times a month
Only 4% less than once a month.

Again you haven't provided anywhere near enough evidence to convince anyone of the sociological consensus that there is a crisis among young men specifically.

You agree there are widespread changes due to technology but don't agree that... the widespread changes are widely affecting men? What sense does that make? So the average guy is unaffected?

I never claimed the average guy is a total incel so I'm not sure the point you're trying to make.

We can discount the Pew study on double the women cohabitating entirely and still come to roughly the same conclusions based on how many people are meeting their partners online and what like/dislike ratios look like across genders online.…

The only one I'm not sure about is Khatimah. The rest are all translated yes.

You're speaking about tasawuff like it's the occult. As if you perform certain rituals sincerely so that you can gain superpowers. Allah grants karamat to His Awliyyah out of His Will due to their Taqwa. When a person's will is aligned with Allah's (tawfiq) but the rest of the Dunya is opposed to this wali, that's when the normal rules are bent and we witness this. It has nothing to do with made-up awrad being done a made-up number of times.

Actual tasawuff is grueling and difficult because it involves determining what the most important ibadat are for you to do and doing them according to the Quran & Sunnah. These ibadat might require tremendous amounts of sacrifice and suffering until the nafs has truly submitted (istislam) to Allah.

Biddah will never lead to a true connection with Allah or karamat. It will lead to heresy and misguidance.

I don't know what you have been reading. Al-Junayd ibn Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said, “Our knowledge of Tasawwuf is defined by the Book and the Sunnah. Whoever does not memorize the Quran, nor write the prophetic teachings,…

I think this may explain the very well known problem of the engine shutting off mid-ride on these models.

I don't think this is a new problem. People have been riding for years without issues besides it occasionally turning off. I'm still riding mine (but it's cold outside now) normally. Just waiting to hear from Husqvarna when they have the fix to take it to the dealership.

r/TraditionalMuslims

It would be easier to understand what you need to read if there were more details on what books you've read before this and your overall Islamic education.

Here's what I would recommend. Do the first book in each topic then circle back around. I stuck to mostly Salafi-Hanbali texts for consistency not because I think they're the best.

In Usul al-Din you should read at least:

1. Commentary on the 40 Hadith of Imam al-Nawawi
2. Aqidat ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani

In Aqidah you should read at least:

1. Commentary on the Three Fundamental Principles by Salih al-Uthaymin
2. Safinat al-Najat by al-Kittani

In Fiqh you should study at least two foundational madhhab texts. For Hanbali:

1. Akhsar al-Mukhtasarat (there are youtube lectures)
2. Commentary of Umdah al-Fiqh by Hatem al-Haj

In Tazkiyyah you should read at least:

1. Purification of the Soul by ibn al-Qayyim, ibn Rajab, and other authors
2. Heaven's Door by ibn al-Qayyim, ibn Rajab, and other authors

In Tajwid you should study with a teacher at least:

1. The Nuraniyyah rules of Arabic letters
2. Tuhfat al-Atfal basic tajwid

In Quranic sciences:

1. How to Read and Approach the Quran by Zarabozo
2. Tafsir al-Sa'di (short topical overview of the Quran)

In Sunnah you should read at least:

1. The Sealed Nectar by Mubarakpuri
2. Shamail al-Tirmidhi

Western literature has to be viewed with a critical lens because literature isn't just fantasy and stories. There's a philosophical edifice behind it that has to be understood & dissected. In a lot of ways, after the Renaissance, Westerners turned to literature to deal with philosophy & psychology instead of the kinds of tracts we see in the Islamicate world (and which they had before the Renaissance).

To Nietzsche, art and literature were a secular replacement for the meaning that religion (Christianity) used to give Europeans.

That being said, one of my shuyukh has a master's degree in English literature.

That being said the intention of the person, the specific book, and their preparedness all matter.

If there's nothing haram in the book and it doesn't distract from obligatory actions the default of pleasure reading is that it is mubah (permissible).

Jane Austen isn't particularly known for the kinds of heavy themes you might see in Dostoyevsky or Kafka, she's primarily dealing with Victorian era social commentary especially around marriage. It's worth noting that Jane Austen herself never married.

I think it's best not to make the Din overly complicated or harsh but you need to find someone reliable you can consult with on these issues as opposed to reddit posts.

Edit: someone has informed me that Austen was in the regency/georgian era not Victorian

This has to be the most confusing manual I've ever seen on this topic, which is a straightforward topic.

A menstruating woman does not have to pray anything while menstruating. She begins praying when she is pure. There are only three times of day in which she can become pure:

1. Fajr (once the sky begins to be filled with the light of dawn until the disc of the sun has fully risen)
2. Dhuhr-Asr (after Fajr until the sun begins to set)
3. Maghrib-Isha (from the complete setting of the sun until Fajr)

The question is not what she prays going forward after purity. She has to pray everything. The question is what salah times have elapsed that she needs to still pray.

If the woman becomes pure at night, she prays Maghrib and Isha. If she becomes pure during the day, she prays Dhuhr and Asr. If she becomes pure in the early morning, she prays Fajr.

The reason for this is that the obligation of Dhuhr continues throughout the time of Asr and the obligation of Maghrib continues throughout the time of Isha.

I'm criticizing what Aboo Ruqayyah tried to do with what bin Baz said. I'm well aware of the rules of hayd. Your explanation here makes no sense because it doesn't tell you which Maghrib & Isha to pray or why. It could be the Maghrib of the previous day or the Maghrib of the upcoming day or a Maghrib two weeks from now.

Easy way to set someone up for disappointment and create resentment of Islam is to ignore the wider societal issues and look at exceptional circumstances. There is a problem with marriage & relationships that goes beyond the Muslim community. The difference is that Muslims are dealing with the Shariah, cultural biases, and the wider sociological problems being superimposed on top of that.

There are going to be righteous eligible candidates that cannot get married or ultimately lose interest in marriage or it takes them so long to get married that marriage loses all of its meaning. We cannot have the same messaging to these people as we did for 20 year olds in the '90s.

Constantly emphasizing getting prepared and self improvement becomes a humiliation ritual and a trap. There is such a thing as becoming so self sufficient and improved that you cannot find a spouse who matches your level. What then?

Several ulama of the past held that only the meanings were distorted and not the texts. I think it's a plainly ahistorical view but there are some heavyweights. Rejecting hadith is a different matter.
