I don't even think that's entirely accurate for Europe let alone urban Islamic/Asian centers before the Gutenburg press. Certainly literacy went up but widespread education did not start after the industrial revolution.

This adds interesting color to the above post. It seems that the way to reconcile them is:

A literate society is one that requires a writing system for functionality, which means enough people that participate in the economy or government need to be able to read.

How "literate" those people are varies from the base level of functionality needed to sign a document, inscribe their name, perform basic calculations - to being able to read works of complex literature.

Pre-Islamic Arabia seems to be a literate society with most literate people being basically functional and a few, mostly due to their need to engage with Jewish/Christian scriptures, being highly literate.

Is that how you understand it as well?

You don't find the distinction amongst literate people that are functionally or barely literate and people that are highly literate important in this context? I.e. the difference between being able to effectively be a cash register teller versus being able to read the Torah?

Nowadays, we would consider a high school graduate who couldn't read the Torah as less literate or behind grade level and being able to do the math required to be a cash register "entry level."

It would seem that's one of the things OP's quote is trying to highlight.

Didn't mean to suggest you were. Just trying to understand it better myself

Some of the ideas he espoused were articulated before him but not as fully as he did. For example his position on the createdness of the Qur'an & the concept of Kasb. Ibn Kullab was a predecessor. Ash'ari really used the Mu'tazilite methodology to reach the conclusions of the muhadithun/Sunnis. This is especially evident in al-Ibana which was written to be almost a Hanbali kalam text (& widely rejected at that time).

What made Ashari so effective was introducing didactic theology into Sunnism not so much the uniqueness of the positions he proposed.

The amount of posts on here that are a result of not understanding Arabic is staggering

Scenario 1:

"There's no way I'm pregnant. I haven't been with a man."

Scenario 2:

"There's no way I'm pregnant. I haven't been with anybody."

Anybody is more inclusive than "a man" and also more emphatic.

Or... Abu Hurayrah went around collecting hadith. He was an early hadith historian who personally heard a few hadith but collected thousands from other people and then narrated them himself. This is called mursal al-sahabi.

Ibn Taymiyyah was not unique in any of these regards. Most of his contemporaries were similarly obsessed with the exact same topics. What makes him different is his idiosyncratic theological views, not the degree of adherence to perceived orthodoxy.

People spend hours every day playing World of Warcraft in 2026. But less than an hour to spiritually recharge, calm one's mind, find solace, strengthen resolve, and improve yourself as a person is an offense to redditors.

An important book but no doubt Alex Haley had certain objectives in mind and perhaps not the most impartial account of Malcolm's life & journey. Recent uncovered evidence adds much more color & many more essential details that Haley was either unaware of or intentionally chose to exclude that change our perspective drastically.

Essentially, Daniel has developed some his views away from the Salafi mainstream. He became vehemently anti-Wahhabi and seemed to be adopting the standard neo-traditionalist views. Jake refuted him from the Salafi perspective. It seems Daniel doesn't quite hold neo-traditionalist views.

Here is an extensive survey of the issue pertaining to calling on the dead or righteous saints:

This video looks at the Ash'ari approach, the Salafi approach, and attempts to fairly compare/contrast.

I haven't gotten a chance to respond to you but yes it seems reddit banned me for some inexplicable reason. Alhamdulillah ala kuli hal

I'll take a look at these. I got sidetracked by my account being weirdly shadowbanned. I do not have access to Signal. My Whatsapp is in my Linktree.

I have certain restrictions due to my legal status like not being able to use encrypted apps.

Islam has free markets, not capitalism. Capitalism is a post-Hegelian ideology based on the belief in an "Invisible Hand" whose goal is to increase total money supply by consuming natural resources & human labor in an unsustainable fashion.

This is something that should be discussed prior to marriage. There are many asexual women that would prefer a best friend. Additonally, research indicates that human sexuality is very flexible. Many "gay" men have productive sexually active marriages with women.

There are many people with desires who are unable to get married. The same theological problem you mentioned applies to them. Yet we don't see that as problematic.

Not being in the Ayah doesn't mean it isn't haram or mandated. He is just indicating it isn't qat'ī to him in his usul.

Historically there were some small areas where veil was not observed and obviously it was observed with many gradients of stricture across the legion Muslim sultanates. But it was always understood to be a religious requirement.

If a man concludes, based on his own ijtihad, that he can get married to one of your female family members in the fashion I described in my original comment - would you say he is entitled to such a view?

This is the problem with adopting early Hanbali theological views that were based on a near eastern cosmology

Liberalism has given us widespread infertility crisis, the anthropocene, climate disaster, social media, & Godlessness. People are more alienated from everything that makes humans happy (religion, relationships, self knowledge, nature, natural food, etc.) and on the brink of existential demise. How is this a success? Because we can DoorDash while Jake Paul fights Tyson on Netflix & we monitor our second screen on Kalshi hoping our bets on Maduro go up? How is that remotely better than living in al-Andalus' golden age?

I got this before my ban,

"At Reddit, we’re always watching out for your privacy, safety, and security. Recently, after detecting some technical irregularities on your aibnsamin1 account, we took the extra precaution of locking your account."

But after changing the password several times still no access?

Anthropologically nearly no Muslim holds the cloth covering of the Ka'ba itself to be sacred, but they revere it because it covers the Ka'ba. So, functionally, disrespecting the Kiswa becomes disrespecting the Ka'ba - while it is the active Kiswa. When it is taken off, then no one has any particular feelings for it (that's why you never see Muslims trying to cut pieces off or purchasing old ones).

What would offend the average Muslim here is Epstein's ATTEMPT to desecrate something he sees as holy to Muslims. The attempt to insult the Ka'ba, even if he wasn't knowledgeable enough to understand the basics of Islamic tenets, is deeply offensive.

It's beyond pretentious to bring up Euthyphro here and it has absolutely no relevance to this discussion.
