By Ali Shukri Amin. I first wrote this as a comment on r/MuslimAcademics, in the thread “Best Beginner Books Gentle introductions to Sufism”, copied here as written.

This seems to be moreso a hodgepodge of random Sufi literature of varying degrees of importance and difficulty.

Tasawuff & Adab are the twin sciences of Ihsan. The major topics of Sufism are:

  1. Taqwa
  2. Inabah (tawba & istighfar)
  3. Diseases of the heart & its cures
  4. Ishārah (the spiritual implications of outward things)

Whereas the major topics of Adab are grouped moreso by who the adab is towards.

For a practical overview of Tasawuff, the Firdous Ltd. compilations Purification of the Soul & Heaven’s Door are some of the best I’ve seen.

The Book of Assistance by al-Haddad is great as a practical manual.

On diseases of the heart & cures, check the commentary on Mohammad Mawlud’s Purification of the Soul done by the Tayba foundation. It is far superior to Hamza Yusuf’s.

Ibn al-Jawzi’s abridgement of al-Ihya is far more approachable and contains a lot of improvements. It’s called Minhaj al-Qasidin.

If you’re looking for a comprehensive overview, AnneMarie Schimmel’s The Mystical Dimensions of Islam is comprehensive for its time.

For adab, sidi Zarruq has al-Nasiha al-Kafiyyah which discusses the adab towards Allah, his prophet, and the Ummah. Mohammed Mawlud has incredible adab texts on the Prohibitions of the Tongue, the Rights of the Parents, and the Adab of the Masjid.

Ihya is considered an advanced text & is studied with commentaries like Safinat al-Najat. Another advanced text is shaykh al-Islam al-Harawi’s Manazil al-Sa’irin, the most famous commentary being ibn al-Qayyim’s Madarij al-Salikin.

The last component of Ihsan is Hikmah (traditional Islamic medicine).

Supplemental Sufi literature includes Sufi poetry, like Rumi or Farid al-Din al-‘Attar.

It should be noted that theological Sufism & Sunni Sufism are distinct although intertwined. Most Sunni Sufis don’t rely on ibn Arabi for example.
